So I want to remind you today, firstly, that your job DOES NOT equal your worth as a person. Sure, a job has many benefits: it can provide you with opportunities to learn new things, to tackle challenges, to make a difference, to make new friends, to develop as a person, to apply things in the real world, to grow in confidence, to earn money, to feel settled and stable, to socialize, to feel part of something greater than yourself. But it does NOT substitute for your intrinsic worth as a person, which is fixed and will never change – regardless of whatever job you do or do not have.

Now we have got that cleared up… I also want to share with you something else you can do to keep your spirits high. While not wanting to get too woo-woo about it, it’s important to get your energy working for you while you are job hunting.

As Wayne Dyer famously said: “You don’t attract what you want. You attract what you are.” And this principle applies just as much in your job applications as in anything else.

So consider what feelings and experiences does the thought of having your dream job generate in you – is it about security and stability? Or excitement and innovation? Or something else?

I challenge you to consider how you can bring more of that energy into your life right now…

Perhaps it is about feeling grounded and supported – in which case you could take a walk in nature, spend time with loved ones or do some exercise.

Or if it is about vibrancy and taking on new challenges, perhaps you could take on something you’ve never done before or join an adventure-based club to make new friends with like-minded people.

Energy really is contagious, so while you’re waiting to land that job, you can create more of the energy you want from your ideal job in your life straight away. In a way that our rational minds can’t really understand, this actually makes it much easier for you to find and be offered the job that you truly want.

Unemployment Blues: Jobs and Immigration

During the past few weeks, and surely for weeks to come, there has been a national focus in the United States on the problems and benefits of illegal immigration. While the many sides debate over amnesty, guest worker programs, routes to citizenship, strengthening the borders, and whether illegal immigrants should be considered felons, the reality of the situation remains unchanged. There are between 10 and 20 million (no one knows for sure) illegal aliens working within the United States. Many have regular full time jobs while others survive as day laborers or temporary workers. Politicians defend the needs of business to find workers to fill the jobs that “Americans are unwilling to do.”

Despite the improving unemployment rate, there are still over 5 million of us out of work, some for a very considerable period of time. For those unfortunates, unemployment payments have long been exhausted. With no regular source of income nor any decent prospects on the horizon, why would anyone turn up their noses at the chance of regular work, no matter what was involved?

We talk a lot about the “inherent dignity of work” as if being productive, in any way, is always better than laying around on the dole, collecting something for nothing. Such was the thinking behind the welfare-to-work push of a decade ago. But when was the last time you saw a politician or career bureaucrat actually have to take one of those “can’t be filled” jobs?

What are those positions that Americans refuse to take such that they must be filled by illegal immigrants?

They may require a migrant lifestyle such as farm labor where workers criss-cross the country following the picking seasons of different crops. Apart from the back-breaking physical demands of the work, how many of us are willing to live in ramshackle temporary huts without modern conveniences, all for an income well below a living wage? In California, the old bracero program recognized the reality and imported cheap labor from Mexico to bring produce to our tables.

They may require extraordinarily long hours. I have worked at restaurants where the illegal kitchen help worked 14 to 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. They only left to sleep at their dorm-type safe houses. They never complained because they could earn enough in a year to return home and live for 2 or 3 years without working at all.

The wages may be so poor that it is counter-productive to take the job. Certainly some income, even the smallest, should be better than no income at all – but not when other costs are factored in such as commuting fees, child care expenses, work clothes, etc.

Then there are the jobs that are simply too demeaning for many of us: day laborer, dishwasher, motel maid, bus cleaner, baggage ramp handler, stable worker. Quite apart from the often deplorable working conditions, we avoid such jobs because they don’t fit in with our subconscious contract with society. Work is our primary medium of exchange with the world: we give our time and energy in order to receive money, recognition, and respect. The more of these we receive, the greater is our perceived value.

To give considerable time and effort and receive little recompense degrades our sense of our own value. When we see ourselves without value as a worker, it is only a short jump to see ourselves without value as a human being. We all want to be needed, cherished, prized: it reassures us that we have importance, that we count, that our lives matter if only in a small way. Without that sense of self-value, we might as well cease to exist, a train of thought that can lead to suicide or other less lethal forms of self-destruction such as drugs, alcohol and similar compulsions.

For limited periods of time, we can handle it, knowing that it’s only temporary and things will change for the better soon. As an unpaid resident in neuropsychology, I went to work as a waitress at night, something I hadn’t done in 25 years. What an eye-opener! I had forgotten the absolute lack of power involved in semi-skilled work where your position and your future depend upon the whims of a demanding and often unreasonable manager or owner. I was warned by other waitresses not to disagree with orders (I was eventually fired) and realized that, for them, the position was worth whatever they had to do to keep it. With no union to protect them, no knowledge of work laws and industry regulations, they accepted everything given and then spent hours bitching about it in the sanctuary of the kitchen.

To take such a position on a permanent basis, knowing that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, that this really is all that there is, means giving up so much of ourselves. We change from happy, confident, caring people into perennial complainers and grousers, growing ever smaller and meaner in our outlook, our demeanor, and our attitude toward the world.

Anyone who can save us from such a fate deserves, in my book, a vote of thanks. I really don’t think it matters what they do in Washington because they’ll never vote for the money to enforce whatever plan they devise, so nothing will really change.

It would be really nice though, to see them put as much focus on corporate off-shoring of those jobs we’d all like to perform. But the lobbyists will make sure that it stays on the back burner and when was the last time unemployed workers took to the streets – 1933?

How Can Colleges Help More Students Land Good Jobs?

Since so many students have large college loans, they must be concerned about the employers and jobs that will be available to them when they graduate. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the students who are not burdened with loans are not also concerned with landing good jobs. I’ve said this before, but it still holds true. In the end, most college students only want three things:

1. A good college education

2. An enjoyable college experience

3. A great job when they graduate

Unfortunately, there are colleges that have trouble achieving all three. Some colleges are known for academic excellence. Others offer large numbers of activities, clubs and parties. Only a few have a reputation for having systems in place to ensure that large numbers of students obtain well-paying jobs with desirable employers that will have advancement opportunities.

Until college leaders change their minds and place a greater value on student employment success, they will not change their behavior. Nobody can effectively change their behavior before they change their minds.

Skeptical leaders always resist change. It scares them. Change usually scares us all until we understand it and believe that the change will make things better for us. That is the challenge.

How can college leaders identify and understand the changes that will both result in greater student employment success and make things better for themselves? Money, manpower and time are issues that are always brought up. However, the most important factors are “wanting to make things better” and “looking for and identifying the things that have to be changed.” Colleges that can’t or won’t do one or both of those things will never improve the employment success of their students.

To improve student employment success, colleges must:

1. Recognize that students are quite limited in their knowledge about job search preparation activities and what, how, when and why they should be done.

2. Accept the fact that the college (a learning institution) is where students spend most of their time and where they expect to receive the information, help and guidance they will need for their employment search.

3. Agree that job search preparation instruction and guidance is in large part the responsibility of the college as a whole, not just students and the people in Career Services.

4. Understand that students must compete against other candidates for the best jobs in their fields of interest. Simply having earned a degree with good grades is often not enough.

5. Believe that their college will benefit when larger numbers of students land desirable jobs with respected employers.

To Help Students Find Greater Employment Success, Colleges Should:

6. Help students identify and select a career direction that matches up with their capabilities and interests not later than their sophomore year. When students wait too long to identify a career direction, there may be little or no time left for clearly focused job search preparation activities. Late decisions may also require extra time in college and additional college loans.

7. In the 1st or 2nd year of college, ask students to purchase and read a book that explains the entire employment process, including job search preparation strategies and efforts. Career Services should suggest one.

8. Early on, require students to draft a personal budget for independent living after college. That will make them think about the coming expenses and give them an idea about the minimum starting salary they will require. A sample budget form can be supplied by Career Services, so students can fill in the blanks.

Having a realistic budget, will encourage students to determine two things: 1) Does the selected career direction have desirable entry level jobs that will meet their budget requirements? and, 2) Do those jobs have good growth potential and a career path?

Qualified students should not blindly enter careers and accept employment offers that make it too difficult for them to live on their own and pay back college loans or offer little salary and career growth potential.

9. Help students select a major and minor that will support their career direction and the jobs that are of interest.

10. Help students prepare a written plan of action that includes the activities and experiences they will participate in to make themselves more attractive to their target employers. Colleges can start by providing each student with a generic example of a step-by-step plan.

11. Offer job search preparation classes to students. These classes should cover every aspect of job search preparation, review the contents of the book that has been selected, help students build and utilize their job search network, create a résumé that is focused on accomplishments and successes and also help students develop the stories and examples they will use during interviews.

12. Have each student research and identify a group of jobs in their selected field of interest. (Having a clear target will make the following steps easier for students to achieve.)

13. Have each student research and identify a list of employers that will have opportunities for students with their own job interests. In that way, students can pursue opportunities with the specific employers that are of interest to them. In almost every case, students must chase employers not the reverse.

14. Help students identify the specific things that their target employers will need, want and expect of employment candidates. (Students are more attractive to their target employers when they have prepared for and addressed their needs, wants and expectations.)

15. Help students research, identify and retain lists of Job Banks, Search Firms and Web Sites that can be useful, as they conduct their searches for employment. Students with similar career directions can work together as a team and share their results. (Initial lists for students in every major should be available from Career Services.)

16. Coach and encourage students, as they execute their action plans. Every campus employee can help with this. In fact, everyone in the college community can help with this. However, college Alumni should be ideal for this aspect of job search preparation. That means that the college has to make a special effort to involve successful alumni in this process.

17. Work to build a larger and larger pool of employers that will provide part-time jobs, internships, co-op assignments, work-study programs and summer jobs for students in each and every major. Work experience and job performance are extremely important to interviewers and their hiring employers. Students with job-related work experience, highly rated job performance and solid work references will always attract attention from potential employers.

18. Work to build a larger and larger pool of respected employers that will visit the campus to recruit students. The goal should also be to find and invite a wide variety of employers so some will be interested in students with the less recruited majors. Many colleges are not good at finding employers that are interested in students from the less recruited majors. In fact, on every campus there will be students who don’t have even one campus interview.

19. There are several types of firefighters within the industry, all with there specialties and services that they use to undertake the day to day duties of a firefighter. They can be specially trained to operate machinery, attack bush fires, emergency site communication and many more.
